Embracing Change: The Key to Blissful Living
Change is a fundamental aspect of life, and our nature is often predisposed to craving the familiar and the stable. Yet, change is inevitable, and it plays a significant role in our lives and the material world. Understanding and embracing it can lead to emotional serenity and a deeper sense of joy.
Comfort and Habit
Humans are creatures of habit. We form routines and ways of doing things that work for us, and we tend to stick to them until they no longer serve us. This is a natural inclination, and it can bring comfort and security. However, the fear of change can often paralyze us, making us resistant to new experiences and challenges.
Change in the Material World
Hindu philosophy teaches us about the three modes of material nature, which can be likened to the lifecycle of a flower, from budding to blooming and finally withering and dying. These modes—sattva (purity), rajas (activity), and tamas ( inertia)—are intrinsic to the material world and apply to every aspect of life, including our personal experiences and relationships.
Change is not exclusive to our lifespans. It is a constant that permeates everything in the material realm. Relationships, careers, schools, movies—everything in life is subject to this cycle. This understanding can cause fear and a desire for things to remain static, but it also presents an opportunity to find beauty in the impermanence of life.
Three Ways to Approach Change
Our response to change can be categorized into three distinct ways:
Sensitive and Happy with Continual Change: Those who embrace change without resistance and find joy in its unpredictability. They are in harmony with the flow of life. Sensitive and Opposed to Change: Those who are acutely aware of change but struggle to accept it. They yearn for the status quo and resist the natural order of the universe. Sensitive but Not Fully Aware: Those who are only sensitive to specific changes and mask their discomfort with self-deception. They may need to work on their sensitivity or recalibrate their triggers to find a balanced approach. The joy of life lies in embracing its constant change and finding delight in the process. It is not about clinging to a fixed idea of who we are but letting ourselves be flexible and open to new experiences.
A Guide to Embracing Change
Dear Jazz,
The reason why you and everyone else want everything to stay the same is that change is unsettling. It takes us out of the comfort zone we had established after the last change came through.
Life is inherently fluid and dynamic. To live a fulfilling life, we must learn to ride the waves of change.
The way to approach change is to accept it as the natural order of the universe. Embrace the constant movement and balance of life, rather than resisting it. Think of life as a surfer on a wave, where we cannot predict what will happen next, but we can maintain our balance and enjoy the ride!
Having a fixed idea of who you are can be like carrying heavy baggage, limiting your freedom and balance. Let go of your fixed ideas and open yourself to the ever-changing nature of life.
Get on the next wave and find joy in the journey!
Best regards,
