Grocery Shopping During Pandemic: Strategies and Reflections

Introduction

My last trip to the supermarket was about six months ago, back when the world felt less chaotic. Ever since the Coronavirus has impacted our daily lives, my grocery shopping habits have undergone significant changes. This article aims to share my personal experiences and the strategies I employ to navigate the challenges of modern supermarket visits.

Pre-Pandemic Grocery Shopping

Typically, a week before now, I would visit Costco to stock up on my weekly food supplies. My shopping routine has since evolved, such that if you include today, I am running my weekly supply run in the next few minutes. Prior to the pandemic, I also shopped for personal computers from Best Buy, a retailer with two nearby stores – one mile from my home and another five miles away.

During the Pandemic

When I last ventured into the cold and snow at 8:00 am to replenish my supplies, I found myself adapting to the new normal. I maintain a regular weekly trip in the early afternoon to avoid peak traffic times, including school and work hours. I specifically avoid shopping on weekends. Additionally, I have access to pickup services for when the crowds get too overwhelming, especially now that a neighbor has contracted the virus and the community is facing an outbreak of flu and RSV.

Recent Supply Challenges

Three days ago, my grocery run was less than ideal. Both Walmart and Kroger stores were out of stock, a common issue due to the Pandemic. This was a particular challenge for items like toilet paper, which I had only six rolls left of and was rationed at the store. On the 16th of March, I finally found some toilet paper, which became a rare commodity.

Adapting to New Norms

On Saturday, 14th March at 12:15 AM, after a long day at work, I discovered a well-stocked supermarket with items I expected like "Everything" bagels, bacon, and Twizzlers. The freezer aisle, however, was nearly empty, with only bacon-wrapped filet mignon and plant-based meat left. This experience made me realize the importance of stocking up on perishables.

Another strategy I use is to stock up enough food and snacks for two weeks. By doing so, I minimize the need to visit the supermarket frequently, thereby avoiding crowds. I recommend doubling up on all items when you go shopping to save time and keep additional supplies on hand for your next trip. This approach not only eases the burden on the crowded market but also ensures you have more resources in case you need them during unexpected shortages.

Conclusion

My grocery shopping has significantly changed due to the pandemic. Through strategic planning and adapting to new shopping norms, I have managed to maintain a steady supply of essentials without exposing myself to unnecessary risks. Whether you are shopping in person or using pickup services, understanding your local supermarket's inventory and planning ahead can make all the difference.
