Has Quarantine Strengthened Family Bonds?

Before the onset of covid-19, I found it challenging to carve out time for family chatter. However, with everyone under the same roof, there’s an abundance of time to connect. This is one of the bright spots amid the pandemic.

Although I haven’t been particularly close to my family for a while, the truth is, our relationships were strained even before the pandemic. I have to be honest and admit that I had a difficult family life. In all fairness, the pandemic wasn’t the cause of my distance; I just didn’t prioritize it back then.

A New Appreciation for Family Time

It’s remarkable how much we now appreciate spending time together. The isolation brought to light the joy of being with our loved ones. We discovered several fun activities that we could do safely.

Indoor and Outdoor Activities

We’ve been a flurry of activity, from indoor and outdoor water gun “fights,” to gaming sessions and activities, happily taking turns to pilot the pontoon boat on the lake. A major highlight has been our creative efforts, such as TikToks initiated by our granddaughter and attending online cooking classes together.

Economical Entertainment

Since our budgets were stretched due to the usual expenses on new clothes, dining out, and entertainment, we shifted our focus to making lasting family memories. We purchased a large trampoline and a game table, hosted tournaments and challenges, and enjoyed family movie nights.

Living through the pandemic, we’ve also celebrated significant events. A relative’s 100th birthday was celebrated with a Zoom party, and we delivered gifts and treats to those who fell ill. Instead of funerals, we held online vigils or celebrations in their honor.

Embracing a New Normal

While we yearn for the old, pre-pandemic way of life and our social interactions, we’ve learned to focus on the moments that we do have. As we slowly regain a semblance of normalcy, we aim to maintain social distance and wear masks in crowded public spaces.

Looking ahead, we’re hopeful about the possibility of celebrating Thanksgiving with a full gathering of guests. In the meantime, we’re making the best of the situation and supporting each other.

Conclusion

Quarantine has brought us closer to our family in unexpected ways. It’s not just about surviving the pandemic; it’s about finding joy and creating meaningful memories.
