McCarthy’s Tenure as Speaker of the House: A Review
In a word, diddley/squat. Seriously, he did bugger all other than to keep the Government funded for a bit via a deal with the Democrats who were increasingly irked with him for the number of times he broke his word and then badmouthed them.
Kevin McCarthy, the current Speaker of the House, made too many wildly diverging promises to too many people to stay on as Speaker. He wanted the title but never really thought about the cost of his promises. Nancy Pelosi is watching him and laughing a lot.
Legislatively Not Very Much
Legislative achievements, however, are minimal. Despite this, it's expected given his political stance. McCarthy did manage to get President Biden to begin negotiations to raise the debt ceiling, something Biden said he would not do. While this is a step, it still lacks significant legislative momentum.
Administratively, McCarthy has made some changes. He formed House committees and had three prominent Democrats removed from their plum committee assignments. He also removed body scanners from the House floor and implemented various rules to return the House to its normal order. Some believe that these changes promise to be an interesting two years, but it remains to be seen.
Two Weeks and Still Nothing
Within the first two weeks, not much has been accomplished. This is reminiscent of those who start screaming about Obama’s accomplishments in six months after eight years of Republican leadership, or in this case, Biden after Trump's fiasco of four years. McCarthy and his team need more than two weeks to do anything of significance, especially considering the first week was devoted to even being elected.
Earnest but Controversial
According to reliable sources, McCarthy dresses himself most days and can tie his own shoes. However, when it comes to legislative accomplishments, he grovels at the feet of the Psycho Caucus, awarding plum House committee positions to conspiracy theorists, malignant liars, white supremacists, and individuals he deems "pea-brained dotards." This has provided ample material for late-night comedians.
His main focus is on the position itself, as he has achieved his life's dream—getting elected Speaker of the House. No other accomplishment matters to him more than this.
Conclusion
McCarthy's tenure as Speaker of the House has been characterized by promises and political maneuvers rather than significant legislative strides. While there have been some administrative changes, these have yet to yield substantial legislative achievements. It remains to be seen how his tenure unfolds over the coming months and years.
