My Garden Evolution: A Journey from Basics to Permaculture

Introduction

My garden journey started with the most accessible and cost-effective methods, but as my interests and goals have evolved, so has my approach. From simple backyard planting to the incorporation of permaculture, raised beds, and container gardening, my garden has transformed into a sustainable and diverse oasis. Here, I'll share my garden story and the reasons behind my choices.

Initial Approach: Basic Backyard Gardening

Back when I started gardening, it was the easiest and least expensive option to simply plant in the front and back yards. These areas provided the perfect conditions for growing a variety of plants, from vegetables to flowers. However, as a solo living individual, the abundance of produce wasn’t necessary, and I relied on my neighbors for vegetables and gave them flowers in return.

Experimenting with Various Methods

Initially, I experimented with a mix of methods: flower pots, raised beds, and even vegetable patches in the ground. The primary driving force behind these choices was my focus on soil health and the establishment of perennial beds. My initial approach was grounded in the belief that building a robust soil ecosystem was the key to long-term gardening success.

Challenges and Limitations

However, the reality of time, money, and access to resources made it difficult to fully implement these methods. The truckloads of organic amendments required for optimal soil health were daunting, and I couldn’t dedicate the necessary time and effort all at once. Instead, I focused on rotational plot improvements and managed 20 x 30 areas.

My goal is to sustain between 3 to 4 plots being treated in this fashion per year. By taking a gradual and intentional approach, I believe it will take me no more than three more years to achieve my perfect garden. This journey is about more than just gardening; it's about creating a sustainable and self-sustaining system over generations.

Current Gardening Methods

Currently, I use raised beds for vegetables and have integrated perennial herbs into the soil alongside the garage. I also maintain flower beds in ordinary soil and add annuals in warm months through containers.

The evolution from basic backyard planting to using raised beds and containers has been a significant shift. Raised beds offer better soil and make it easier to manage soil health and pest control. Containers, on the other hand, allow for more flexible gardening and the cultivation of a diverse range of plants, including vegetables and annual flowers.

Exploring New Gardening Techniques

My initial gardening experience was rooted in the basics, but as I grew more knowledgeable, I expanded my horizons. While I haven’t personally tried container permaculture or food forests, I now have a keen interest in learning about these methods. Container permaculture, for instance, could be a great fit for my small space and urban setting, while food forests would be a fascinating concept to explore.

The journey of gardening is ongoing, and I am committed to growing my knowledge and skills. By combining traditional methods with modern techniques like permaculture and raised beds, I am creating a garden that is sustainable, efficient, and enjoyable. As I move forward, I look forward to continuous improvement and expansion, ensuring that my garden contributes to a self-sustaining and joyful living experience.
