My Top 3 Favorite Indoor Plants: A Personal Garden Journey

" "

Choosing a favorite indoor plant can be a challenging task, much like picking a favorite book to read or a best friend. As someone who has cultivated a variety of indoor plants over the years, I've found a selection that stands out.

" "

1. Impatiens Balsamina: An Easy Gardener's Best Friend

" "

Among my top choices for indoor plants is the Impatiens Balsamina. Known for its vibrant and colorful blooms, this plant is a joy to grow, requiring minimal effort to thrive. The Impatiens Balsamina is an excellent choice for those just starting their indoor gardening journey. Even with a novice green thumb, this plant will continue to flourish despite occasional neglect.

Its colorful and cheery blossoms make it a delightful addition to any windowsill, creating a cheerful and lively atmosphere. As an easy-to-grow plant, it's an excellent way to introduce someone to the rewarding world of indoor gardening.

2. Money Plant (Epipremnum aureum)

" "

Another favorite indoor plant of mine is the Money Plant (Epipremnum aureum). This beautiful, climbing plant is known for its vibrant, heart-shaped leaves that span a rich, verdant green. What makes the Money Plant so special is its forgiving nature. If you are not the most diligent when it comes to plant care, this plant will continue to thrive, offering endless greenery and beauty.

" "

As a leafy climber, the Money Plant not only enhances the aesthetics of your indoor space but also serves as a symbol of wealth and good fortune, making it a popular choice among homeowners and plant enthusiasts. Cultivation is straightforward, requiring only occasional watering and occasional pruning to keep the plant tidy.

3. Bougainvillea: The Showstopping Flowering Plant

" "

Bougainvillea, with its eye-catching and flamboyant blooms, is one of the standouts in my collection of indoor plants. This flowering plant is a visual masterpiece, featuring colorful bracts that surround tiny, inconspicuous flowers. Its vibrant colors and lush foliage make it a joysome addition to any room, even if it demands a bit more care than other options.

" "

As a flowering plant, Bougainvillea requires more attention, including proper lighting and regular pruning, but the results are well worth it. If you are willing to put in a little extra effort, the Bougainvillea will reward you with a mesmerizing display of blooms, enhancing your indoor space with its splendor. It can be trained to climb supports or used as a hanging basket, adding a dramatic touch to your decor.

Recent Favorites: Ghost Orchid, Opium Poppy, and Belladonna

" "

While the above three are my current favorites, reminiscing about the plants that once held my heart can be a compelling journey. My latest obsession is the Ghost Orchid (Dendrophylax lindenii), a mysterious and ethereal plant that has captivated me ever since reading The Orchid Thief. The slow-motion scenes from the movie adaptation, where Meryl Streep describes the ghostly beauty of the orchid and its fascinating history, resonate deeply with me.

" "

Prior to that, as a man in my 20s, the Opium Poppy (Papaver somniferum) held a special place. I admired its ethereal beauty, vivid colors, and association with Morpheus, the God of Sleep, from which the drug morphine derives its name. This stunning plant also evoked a sense of mystery and intrigue, as it is both beautiful and deadly.

" "

Before I fully understood the concept of getting "high," during my childhood, the Belladonna (Atropa belladonna), or deadly nightshade, held a whimsical allure. Its dark purple berries, resembling tiny tomatoes, and historical ties to witches made it a fascinating subject for my young imagination. This plant, however, comes with a warning: it is highly toxic and should be avoided.

" "

While these plants might not be in my collection today, they continue to hold a special place in my heart, symbolizing various stages of my life and my ever-evolving relationship with nature and beauty.

Current Indoor Plant Collection

" "

Although my current residence does not allow much natural light, I still manage to keep a few indoor plants on the windowsill. Included are several varieties of Christmas Cacti (Schlumbergera), which add a touch of festive cheer. Also, I have a couple of African Violets (Saintpaulia) and an overgrown Haworthia, a succulent that flourishes without much care. Lastly, a few Aloe Vera plants are a welcome addition, with their medicinal properties and simplicity of care.

" "

Along with these indoor delights, I also have 23 different rose bushes, numerous shrubs, and a variety of fruit trees outdoors, most of which were planted by the previous owner. While my indoor space is limited, I am fortunate to have a beautiful outdoor garden that continually offers beauty and joy.
