The Unconditional Friendship: Mother as the Best Friend
Our mother-daughter relationship often evolves beyond just blood ties, transforming into an unbreakable bond of love, support, and friendship. In certain cases, the friendships we share with our mothers can truly be the most meaningful ones in our lives. This is particularly evident in my own journey, where my mother's unwavering support and unconditional love have helped me overcome significant challenges, including a difficult past.
A Difficult Beginning
My relationship with my mother was marked by years of verbal, physical, and mental abuse, which continued into my adulthood. The emotional scars from these experiences left me with a deep resentment towards her for a long time. However, over the years, my mother's relocation to a neighboring state and my subsequent visits transformed our relationship.
Little by little, we were able to establish a somewhat reasonable relationship, although it could never return to the warmth and affection we once shared. Yet, through the ashes of a troubled past, a true friendship began to emerge, one that was rooted in mutual understanding and support.
Understanding and Support
A true friend in one's life is more than just a person who shares joy and success; it is someone who stands by your side during the darkest times. My mother has demonstrated this trait time and time again.
She is attuned to my likes and dislikes, to my moods, and to the situations that trigger my emotions. She effortlessly adapts her behavior to make me feel better and more comfortable.
On one memorable occasion, I was on the brink of a life-altering decision – suicide. The failure in my first semester of graduation coupled with the pressure of being a high-performing student (dining on perfect grades at 96 and 97) had pushed me to the limits. But instead of giving in to despair, my mother's support was a beacon of light. She simply said, "COME HOME DAD BROUGHT UR FAVOURITE ICECREAM WE SHALL CELEBRATE IT," which, despite being on a call from my hostel, made a profound impact on me. Her message resonated deeply, and I returned home to face my challenges head-on.
Shared Moments and Celebrations
Fostering such a bond often involves small, shared moments and coping with life's adversities. After that intense self-humiliation, I promised to stand tall, and I did just that. My dedication culminated in me becoming a topper of my university after graduation. These events served as a testament to the transformative power of my mother's unwavering support.
My mother's approach is also marked by an understanding sense of humor. In her typical, playful manner, she asks about her son-in-law, or in my case, her son's marital status. Following my graduation, her first question was, "DOI HAVE ANY SON IN LAW?" This unexpected and amusing query left me momentarily flabbergasted, but I quickly replied in the negative. Her genuine interest and the way she engage with these topics reflect her love and desire to know more about my life.
Unconditional Love and Support
Additionally, my mother's love is not conditional. She never imposes her opinions on me, and instead, she considers me on par with her son, giving me equal priority and respect. This serves as a stark contrast to the treatment my younger brother often receives. He is frequently subjected to additional scrutiny and restrictions, receiving less freedom and independence.
Ultimately, the mother-daughter relationship can indeed transform into a true friendship, one that transcends the confines of a blood tie. It is a reminder that true friends are those who love and support us unconditionally, through thick and thin, and that such relationships are invaluable.
