Why Aren't Urinals a Common Fixture in Private Residences?
I've thought of that before. You just haven't been to the right houses. The main advantage that urinals provide in public restrooms is efficiency. Urinals can be placed much closer together than toilet stalls. People need to drain their bladders much more often than they need to evacuate their bowels. Most of the time when someone visits a public restroom, they just need to drain their bladder. I don't know what the exact ratio is but certainly three urinals would fit in the same space as two toilet stalls. If there is room for eight toilet stalls, then there would be room for four toilet stalls and six urinals. Ten men could be using the restroom at the same time instead of only eight.
How often is there a line of people who need to use the toilet in a typical home? Almost never. Furthermore, most people are so phobic that they close and lock the door when they're using the restroom in their own homes. For that reason, it's not even possible for one person to be taking a shower while another uses the toilet. Much less one person using the toilet while another uses the urinal. OMG! Family members may see each other engaged in normal and natural human behavior.
Personal Experience with Urinals in Private Residences
I do have experience with this, and the last two homes I've lived in had them. When you are raising 4 sons and have their buddies always over, my house was more like a frat house/locker room lol. My wife insisted on it when they were little, and now they're grown, I use it every day.
The Housing Industry's Perspective on Urinals in Private Residences
Why don't residential houses come with urinals for men? Mostly because the needs of men are not respected. The housing industry apparently still expects men to either:
a. go out behind the barn to pee or b. piss in the sink. Note that kitchen sinks are too high for men to piss in conveniently but standard bathroom sinks are set to a lower level where men can pee in them.A man pissing into a sit-down toilet while standing always causes splash. The splash leads to wet floors and fine droplets spreading fecal bacteria throughout the room. It also leads to well-known female complaints about putting the seat down. It's not an adequate solution for a home if you expect men to live there.
A urinal for men in a residential bathroom is clean and functional. It takes less cleaning and causes less mess than men pissing into a common sit-down style toilet.
